SGAE welcomes the major advance in copyright protection in the digital domain after approval by the European Directive 26/Mar/2019

The Spanish General Society of Authors and Publishers (SGAE) welcomes this major advance in copyright protection on the digital market thanks to the European Parliament’s approval of the Copyright Directive today.

Pilar Jurado, President of SGAE, said "It is a very important day for culture and for the entire authors’ community. We greatly appreciate the parliamentarians and the creator organizations and associations, with whom we have worked in recent years, for making this advance possible. The approval of this Directive opens the doors to a better future for creators and gives more value to their indispensable contribution to the digital environment.”

The Directive is essential for progress in author centred creativity, which will receive proportional compensation for contents made available on digital platforms.  Users will find greater transparency and legal security.  The technological sector will also gain from it, as all operators will follow the same regulations in the contents area.  The text also recognises a principle of remuneration for audio-visual creators, who may receive compensation for the exploitation of their work in other countries.

This excellent news now involves the transposition of the European Directive to Spanish regulations, which we hope will be done as soon as possible.
