Choose license Do I need a licence to publish a record?

​To publish a record on the market, you need to have the corresponding Reproduction and Distribution licence from the Society of Authors in the country where the record is going to be distributed.

Examples of fees

​For the manufacture of 15,000 records to be distributed at newsstands at an independent price of € 9.90, the fee applied for the concept of manufacturing would be € 0.6055 per unit manufactured.

What does this licence include?

  • Media with a Printed Publication

    ​This licence groups together three types of productions:

    • Media distributed together with part-works or books for a combined price.

    • Media distributed with newspapers or magazines where acquisition is optional.

    • Media distributed with newspapers or magazines inseparably from the publication.

Deductions and rate reductions

​For media distributed together with part-works or books for a combined price, the producer may opt between:


- Settling up the copyright on the basis of the units manufactured, with application of a declining scale
- Settling up the copyright on the basis of the units sold, in which case the declining scale will not be applied. An initial settlement must be made for 50% of the total manufactured and the remainder will have to be settled up within 70 days according to the units sold.  

For media distributed with newspapers or magazines where acquisition is optional and the price is independent of that of the publication, the producer may opt between:

- Settling up the copyright on the basis of the units manufactured, with application of a declining scale
- Settling up the copyright on the basis of the units sold, in which case the declining scale will not be applied. An initial settlement must be made for 50% of the total manufactured and the remainder will have to be settled up within 70 days according to the units sold

The delivery of copies of physical media containing works in the SGAE repertoire to a store for sale to consumers constitutes distribution.

  • What is a phonographic recording? Who is the producer of a phonographic recording?

    A phonographic recording is a recording of a musical work on a physical medium. Phonographic recordings include records, tapes, compact disks or any other product in which a musical work is recorded. The producer of the phonographic recording is habitually identified by the name of the recording company or record label. The producer is the entrepreneur on whose initiative and responsibility the recording of a musical work is made and the person to whom the exploitation rights of the phonographic recording belong.
